Custom Packaging 101: Everything You Need to Know Before Your First Order

Ordering custom packaging for the first time can feel overwhelming. MOQs, dielines, lead times, finish options — there is a lot to navigate. This guide breaks it all down so you can walk into your first order with confidence.

Custom rigid drawer box with soft touch matte finish and embossed logo — luxury gift packaging

What Exactly Is Custom Packaging?

Custom packaging means every aspect of your box — dimensions, material, finish, and print — is designed and manufactured specifically for your product and brand. Unlike stock boxes, nothing is off-the-shelf. The result is packaging that fits your product perfectly and communicates your brand at every touchpoint.

The Two Main Categories

Rigid boxes are constructed from thick chipboard and hold their shape permanently. They deliver a premium, weighty feel that communicates quality before a product is even seen. Our Magnetic Closure and Rigid Drawer Style boxes fall into this category. They are ideal for jewelry, cosmetics, electronics, and high-end gifting.

Folding cartons are made from thinner paperboard and ship flat, which reduces storage and freight costs significantly. They assemble quickly and can carry every premium finish available on rigid boxes — at a lower price point. Ideal for retail shelves, e-commerce fulfillment, and subscription boxes.

Minimum Order Quantities (MOQs)

MOQs exist because setup costs — including tooling, plate-making, and press setup — are spread across the print run. Our MOQs start from 50 units for rigid boxes and 100 units for folding cartons. This makes premium packaging accessible to emerging brands and limited editions, without requiring you to tie up capital in warehouse inventory.

Understanding Lead Times

Here is a realistic timeline for most custom orders:

Total from approval to doorstep: 30–45 days for most orders. Rush timelines may be possible for certain products — contact us to discuss.

Artwork Requirements

For clean, professional print results, we recommend supplying artwork in Adobe Illustrator (.ai) or PDF format at a minimum of 300 DPI. All fonts should be outlined, colors set to CMYK (not RGB), and a 3mm bleed applied to all edges. Any foil stamping, emboss, or spot UV areas should be placed on a separate layer so our production team can set them up correctly.

Finish Options Explained

Soft Touch Lamination gives the surface a velvety, matte feel. It is scratch-resistant, tactile, and widely regarded as the most premium finish available. Highly recommended for luxury products.

Foil Stamping applies a metallic film — gold, silver, rose gold, holographic, and others — to specific design elements using heat and pressure. Even a small foil logo can elevate the perceived value of a box dramatically.

Embossing and Debossing create a raised or recessed texture. Combined with foil (foil emboss), it is one of the most striking finishes available for logos and key design elements.

UV Spot Coating applies a high-gloss varnish to selected areas, creating contrast between a matte surface and glossy highlights. Logos and product names respond particularly well to this treatment.
